Askeaton, Co. Limerick

Located next to the river that flows through Askeaton village, this friary was founded by Gerald 'The Poet', 4th Earl of Desmond around 1400. In June, the following wild flora were identified: Bulbous Buttercup, Creeping Buttercup, Dog Rose, Daisy, Herb Robert, Ivy-leaved Toadflax, White Stonecrop, Black Medick, Birdsfoot Trefoil, Great Mulllein and a Hawksbeard. A young Elder tree was growing immediately outside the boundary wall. A black lichen, Collema sp. and a white lichen, Aspicilea calcarea were also identified. On the edge of the village, this site lends itself to quiet reflection. 

Askeaton village with its historic friary and Desmond castle is situated next to the River Deel which flows into the Shannon estuary. The lower reaches of the River Deel are part of the Lower River Shannon Special Area of Conservation (SAC). A nature trail for walkers extends along the Deel between the village and the Shannon estuary.
