Donegal Friary is the burial place for many deceased of Donegal town. The friary was founded c.1473x4 by Nuala O'Connor and her son, the first Red Hugh O'Donnell. In the 17th century, The Annals of the Four Masters which chronicle Irish history supposedly from the Creation to 1616, were compiled by local friar Br. Mícheál Ó Cléirigh & his companions next to the River Drowse a few kilometres south of the friary. Today the friary is in a very ruined state, and yet its marginal location a little distance away from the hustle-and-bustle of Donegal town, and its fine view across the estuary lends itself to reflective thought and prayer.

Donegal town and its historic friary are situated next to the Donegal Bay Special Area of Conservation (SAC), Special Protection Area (SPA), and proposed Natural Heritage Area (pNHA). Flowing through the town itself is the River Eske which flows out of and is part of Lough Eske and Ardnamona Wood SAC.
